Origins and Traditions

Established in 1935 developing footwear specialized for the wet elements, Sperry Top Sider was the first company in the world to introduce shoes using siped rubber outsoles with non-marking traction and later on, technically advanced footwear to endure rough and rocky terrain and harsh weather elements whilst remaining comfortable and keeping the foot warm. The story of Sperry Top Sider is rather unusual: on a fresh chilly winter day in 1935, sailor/inventor Paul Sperry was touched by inspiration watching his cocker spaniel Prince speeding about on the frosty ice-covered ground outside their house, excited as only a playful dog can be exploring that strange white stuff from above. Paul suddenly realized how the dogs claws digging into the ice kept it from losing grip and tumbling around on the ice. The soon to become a famous inventor went up and rushed into his work room, picked up a pen knife and used it on a pair of worn out rubber sneakers, cutting sipings into the outsoles. The Boat Shoe was born.

In combination with other brilliant designs, Sperry later created what would be known as the Authentic Original, famous world-wide as the Sperry Top Siders Boat Shoes, even being part of the US Naval Academy casual uniform.
